Description

The title for this pic is a bit full on but I wanted to use it in order to draw attention to what I believe is an important topic. The shot is of Manal who has just modeled at my most recent workshop. The theme of the day was about photographer and model being present and helping each other to feel composed and secure. However during the early part of the shoot which was the fashion session Manal started to feel uncomfortable. It was very evident to me that her features were tense and that she was not free and flowing in the moment. In between the two sections I had a chat with Manal and she told me she was feeling pathetic. This is such a strong word and to me reflects a sense of deep trauma. Obviously a photo shoot is not life and death however many of us do get buttons pushed in various life activities that take us back to past pain that is stored within. This is why it is so important both in photography and life to be aware to what we are feeling when in relationship. I believe that our thoughts and emotions are transferred and that if we are not aware of this that we can get badly hurt at least on an emotional level. I believe that one of the reasons Manal was feeling so devestated was that she felt she was letting the photograhers down. I think that most humans have a fear of letting others down especially when in situations that are not regular ones for them. Modelling in front of strangers can be a very overwhelming experience and as photographers we need to be aware of how our subject is feeling. Whilst emotional discomfort is not often communicated verbally we can sense discomfort in others if we slow down and meditate on the moment. As it was Manal did regain her composure and provided us all with some great photographs.
