(Contains: nudity)
The following are words written by the model in this shot. This image is from one of my photographic workshops. These events encourage the photographers and models to be transparent in their communication.I believe that the model's honesty here is even more empowering than her photo. ------Some of the most empowering moments in my life have been standing in front of a lens that captures only truth. I love doing art nude shots but have always felt guilted by society to not offend others with my nudity. The truth is, I am so afraid of judgement that I will listen and act upon that fear instead of acting from my heart and as a result have suffered inner conflict and depression. This experience for me evokes my truest essence of which i wish to live through everyday but find it hard with the constraints of society and often find myself conforming so that i feel accepted. I would like to share my experience as I feel it can only shed light on the dark issues many people have with self acceptance and self expression... I know others have shared this experience but have also feared what might come of expressing themselves creative ways. I feel I develop more self awareness and more connection when I live within the template of integrity and truth... Claire/Empoweress on DA March 2012

Well I appreciate he willingness to be a subject.  As an aspiring artist It struck me that figure such as hers could be used as a base model for anything you wanted to do because in complete artistic terms she has the perfect shape.

We live in the dark ages still in the USA. It is ridiculous. Anyone who could possibly think this to be offensive is...I don't know, it is just unthinkable.
I love what this young lady says about integrity and truth...I remember being raised in Catholic school that the feminine body is wicked and lust is a "mortal sin"...which I look back now and find funny because they dressed the girls in those little skirts...
other countries do not find the feminine form shameful...about time for the US to catch up.

This young lady proves that Beauty is NOT always just skin deep. Her beautiful form is captured in beautiful lighting, the near perfect pose (sorry - I have yet to call any pose perfect - just my way of keeping reality in focus), against a fabulous choice of background. The contrast brings her beauty even more in focus. And when you read her thoughts.. you realize she is also truly BEAUTIFUL inside. Kudso to you both!

Words that ring true, indeed. I've read works of philosophers who write about the lens/camera and its ability to captivate 'truth'. There is indeed a certain 'truth' in that. Interesting read too.

I also think that people offended by nudity of this (gentle) nature should be blaming themselves, as there is no content on this picture whatsoever that can offend any rational (human) being. Well, in theory, the necklace could offend someone, but I sincerely doubt that. :p Nudity obviously is one of the purest forms of being. Strip away societal influence, and you get only nudity. People too often associate it with sexual acts, and though this is understandable, it's a very narrow viewpoint.

I can't begin to explain how the comments made toward this photo and my writing, have touched me. It is in these moments that I feel proud.
I have had an underlying pull toward honesty and transparency my whole life but have always given in to the pressures that encourage so much less of who I am.
Until today I did not feel the gravity that standing in your own truth could create and because of these comments I am even more sure that this is who I am.
Thank you to everyone and thank you to Tony Ryan who has lived the last 10years by my side never losing faith in who I was.

truly stunning image -- and the addition of the model's verbal input adds an entirely new dimension to the photo, as well as being something we all can relate to on some level or another ... superball around!

If by spiritual you mean going deep inside her own emotions then definitely yes. To me a person who is aware of how they are really feeling is one who is connecting with their inner spirit essence. Claire has made a comment below and has opened her own account called empoweress.

The only person who's opinion of who you are and what you do that matters is the one that stares back at you from the mirror. You are the only person with whom you need to share space, both physical and mental for the rest of your life.

If you're happy with who you see when you look in the mirror, and with the choices you've made, then you're doing it right. If you're unhappy, change. Any other input from anyone else may open your eyes to another point of view, but it has no relevance to you, no weight on you unless you give it some. Anyone who tries to impose their viewpoint on you is likely someone who doesn't deserve to live in your world.

This is a beautifully captured, wonderfully lit work of natural art.

Beautiful work from both of you. It's the courage and conviction that you both have to your art that is inspiring here. Claire's thoughts and insights bring a refreshing spirituality and depth to the composition, a whole other dimension to consider. Thanks for including them here.

It's seems to me many illusive factors have to come together to make a work like this happen. Not just the obvious technical factors but some "intangibles" as well. For example your ability to emphasize not just her amazing physical gifts but having the extended connection that allows her to be at ease and flow as she obviously does in this composition. In doing so, encouraging her creativity in her chosen art. To me it's what makes a photographer an artist. Not everyone has this ability to see and connect to their subjects on such a spiritual level. It's truly one of your gifts and I see it's influence throughout your gallery.

On a critical note( as if i have any business critiquing) If you can, you should put the top of her head in the picture or maybe even go full length, it would be magnifique! I'm just saying...Who wants to see just the middle of the Eifel tower? Also, I can't decide if I like the jewelry in the composition..it seems out of place... like spinners on a Ferrari. There's enough natural gold in her hair and the highlights of her skin to grab our attention. You always do such a great job of accentuating your models natural physiques with the lighting and posture it just seems like un-needed clutter.

Anyway, another great shot Tony! Claire...just keep doing what you're doing! Some of us get it and with a poster child like you maybe we can convert a few of the conservative lemmings into seeing the beauty they have been unjustly conditioned to reject!

Cheeers to you both and thanks for sharing your amazing talents!

Phil

Hi Phil, thanks so much for your words. They are a great commentary on the passion I have in the photographic relationship. Like your point about the Eifel Tower. However the shot is cropped in the camera like this.Something I will take on board for future shots though. You also have a point with the jewellery. I do like natural but at the time wasn't paying much attention on her accessories.I also support your views about Claire and others like her having a chance to convert some of the closed minds surrounding this subject.I think it would be great if all humans decided to be more transparent about their deeper feelings.

Going back a ways into history- there's always been this weird disconnect- Society generally craves beauty, & art is a huge piece of most modern culture, and yet artists have been on the outskirts of culture & society, and artists's models even further out. 100 years ago models & actresses were barely more accepted than prostitutes (possibly because in order to survive, they probably engaged in it it, part-time). I think societal perception hasn't changed all that much, which is really sad & more than a little hypocritical- we want the beauty, still, we shame the models that make capturing that beauty possible.

So, I applaud the courage of models who work with photographers & artists, standing apart isn't easy, but sometimes it's exactly what you have to do to be true to yourself, & being true to yourself is something to be proud of.

Thoroughly agree with you. Our world is dominated by a need to survive and to have control over others. However a creative way of life is to feel really deeply. Claire does feel deeply and because of this has often felt vulnerable. However I trust that she will with the support ganed here on DA be more inspired than ever to go deep.

I hear the voices in her head...

And is it not amazing how our repressive societies [which, I honestly thought you Aussies were a little less so] can so twist out of shape and proportion such a natural and beautiful thing? I mean; look at her, for chrissake! What the hell does she have to be ashamed of, or self-conscious about?! She's friggin' perfect.

Once upon a long time ago, when I was a Long-Haired-Hippie-Type-Weirdo-Freak, a great many of us made an attempt to overcome these repressions, by sheer force of will and numbers. We were that close...

So, yeah.. I hear the voices in her head.

Thanks for sharing.

Tell her not to think too much, there is a big bad world which is not perfect at all, when no one is perfect you should hardly care for what people judges her. She is only showing her beautiful body but not breaking anyone's life and everyone is naked when cloths are removed, true inside is just a lie what we actually show them.

reading her words and seeing her truthful, confident and beautiful smiling makes me trust in that this amazing model will go her way.
and what could anyone have against having beauty spread to the world in a way like done with this lovely picture?
I don't know whether Claire is reading this but you may tell her that she's loved for what she's telling to the world through her work.
